Building on the results from the 2017-2019 project portfolio, at the end of 2020/beginning of 2021, the SESAR JU made provisions for a new set of projects in all three strands of research (exploratory, industrial and large-scale demonstrations). These address several key areas, including urban air mobility (UAM), air traffic management (ATM)/U-space convergence, and advanced U-space services and technologies (U3 and U4), including the development of miniaturisation, automated detect and avoid functionalities, and reliable means of communication (View overview). BUBBLES is among the selected projects and is regarded as an important part of the portfolio.
“With an array of air vehicles emerging, the future airspace is expected to become more complex to manage. That is why the work of the BUBBLES project is so critical to establishing safe and secure drone operations, in support of the European Commission’s U-space initiative. We look forward to seeing the project advance its goal of developing a separation management service and creating safety bubbles in the sky,” says Nil Agacdiken programme manager for U-space projects at the SESAR Joint Undertaking.
